Disabled Students Program: UC Berkeley

The Disabled Students' Residence Program

The Disabled Students' Residence Program (DSRP) provides independent living skills training for Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) consumers/students. DSRP services serve any DOR consumer/UC Berkeley student that would benefit from independent living skills training while attending school at UC Berkeley. Specific program services are designed for DOR consumers attending UC Berkeley with severe physical disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders and other disabilities. DOR consumers do not need to live on campus to participate in the DSRP services. The services have been designed to include a Phase I and Phase II program.

The Independent Living Skills (ILS) training services will enable the student to move from dependence to independence enabling them to learn to make life decisions directed toward independent living and employment. Services will be provided in a two-phase progressive curriculum.

Services are provided in two phases

Phase 1 is a one year transitional program with students acquiring competencies in the service areas listed above.

Phase 2 includes those students who need the above services on a less intensive basis and who do not need personal care assistance and attendant training.

Students in Phase 1, participate in the DSRP for two semesters, living in fully accessible private dorm rooms with the general residence hall student population. For students with severe physical disabilities, DSRP staff members assist students in hiring, training, and using personal assistants.

DSRP is co-sponsored by UCB and the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR).
